Family Ties

Faith, Hope and Charity (Love)

You were born the first of three;
Your faith was followed by hope and charity.

Faith is your gift and your strength,
Even though you may lose sight of it,
It remains deep within your heart.

When Faith falters, hope and love
Will give it new life.

Faith needs hope to give it vision.
Faith needs love to give it a reason.
Faith cannot stand all on its own.
But when joined with hope and love,
Cannot fail.

So my dear sister,
Use the gifts of your brother, Hope
And your sister, Love
To give you strength in this time of need.
They will restore your precious gift of Faith.

Inspiration: I wrote this poem to encourage my sister during a difficult period in her life.
My Grandfather called us these three virtues when we were young.
He passed away when I was 11. He was a wonderful man.

Poems that I wrote for my family one Christmas as gifts:

Brother How We've Grown

I remember when we were young,
We fought like cats and dogs;
Only two years separated in age,
It was inevitable from the start.

The merciless teasing
That I had to endure,
As I went crying to mother,
Only to find no cure.

Hiding under my blanket,
Didn't provide much relief;
The teasing continued,
I couldn't see an end in sight.

Then finally after years had passed,
We both had grown and changed;
The silly little girl,
The teasing little boy.

We realized that we were more alike,
With many interests to share;
We could talk instead of fight,
Maturity was here.

Over the years we have bonded,
We know each moment is rare;
We embrace the time together,
Enjoying whatever we can.

We may go to church or a movie,
Play a game or share a meal;
Do a bit of yoga postures,
Or just laugh and enjoy the day.

How much time can change things,
How much people can grow;
Who would have imagined,
This brother and sister we now know?

An Extraordinary Woman

My brother has found a gem,
A wife and mother, a pearl.
She is an extraordinary woman,
You know it when she walks in the room.

There is nothing she can't accomplish,
Nothing will stand in her way;
She amazes you every moment,
With her abilities and strength.

As a wife she is faithful and true,
Standing by when times are tough;
As a mother she is loving and wise,
She knows what is best and right.

She finds time to express herself,
Making crafts to share and sell;
Her creations are unique and beautiful,
Will her wonders ever cease?

I am thankful that she is there,
To care for my brother and their son;
I cannot think of a better person,
To fulfill this role so well.

My Pride is Overflowing

My pride is overflowing,
For my sister and my friend;
This woman I see before me,
Whom I've finally begun to know.

She was always the caretaker,
Older and liked to be boss;
Over the years we slowly grew,
But always slightly apart.

I never really knew what was missing,
But a part of her she kept inside;
Who was this person I called sister?
I wanted to learn but was scared.

As I became older,
More interests we started to share;
I realized that this sister,
Was so much like myself.

But she had more growing to do,
Before I could truly see,
This vision that is now before me,
A sister of my dreams.

She has conquered her demons,
The hidden battle within;
Her peace is now showing,
Her joy and life are now restored.

I have never felt more pride,
Not even for myself;
My sister has been awakened,
She proves the power of Faith.

I have been given a wonderful gift;
The greatest anyone could know;
I have found my true sister,
I am not letting her go!

Solid as a Rock

The man my sister has found,
Is truly "solid as a rock";
He has become the foundation,
For a new beginning to her life.

Who else could have stood by her,
When times were very tough;
To see her inner beauty,
Through the struggles they endured?

Though no one else could save her,
His love braved the storm;
Without it she wavered,
Finally needing to ask for help.

Tough love is very hard,
But it was the only way
To start a life anew,
To save their love for a new day.

Now that my sister is reborn,
Their love can blossom and grow;
She has been restored by his love,
I am thankful she found him.

He is really a marvel,
A prize winning catch;
So dear sister keep him close;
He has truly passed the test.

A Striking Beauty

Who is this gorgeous creature,
A striking beauty to behold?
Could this be the child I knew,
All grown and spun with gold?

I was only a child myself,
When I first held her in my arms;
So small and dainty in my sight,
I was taken by her charms.

Though many dolls I had held before,
This living doll was a joy;
I held her, fed and changed her,
She was nothing like a toy.

The years have come and gone so fast;
No longer a child is she;
This wonderful niece is fully grown,
It is amazing to see.

With golden locks and fair of face,
Her beauty is second to none;
But it is more than just skin deep;
Many hearts she has now won.

The baby I held is but a memory,
Playing with her was a treat;
But the beautiful woman I see before me,
Is charming and just as sweet.

The Tallest One

This little nephew I once knew,
Has grown and grown and grown;
He has become the tallest one;
His dreams have finally come true.

From a tiny tot to a small young boy,
He wanted to grow more tall;
It seemed to be his only wish,
Growing in height was his joy.

Each person that he could see,
He would compare their height;
"Am I taller than you yet?"
The tallest he wanted to be.

Would he only be content
When he towered above us all?
Well he is now a mighty giant,
His height has been heaven sent.

Not only in height but in brawn,
Has this nephew increased in size;
He is tall, strong and athletic;
His gifts have been withdrawn.

All his wishes have come to light;
His height is second to none;
He beams with pride and so do we,
This young man is quite a sight.

So Precious and Cute

My youngest little nephew
Is so very precious and cute;
He seems to grow cuter every day;
How can this be true?

Each time that I visit,
I never cease to be amazed;
At how wonderful he is,
A joy to behold.

I feel a warm glow inside
When he sees me and exclaims,
Calling my name with glee,
Running to give me a hug.

Each hug and kiss are so dear to me,
Being away is so hard;
I have to savor every one,
To store them up in my heart.

God gave me a precious gift,
This godson to call mine;
A blessing and a little angel,
A Cherubim here on Earth.

The Quiet One

I have a young nephew
Who is the quiet one;
He only speaks when necessary,
When the right moment has come.

He is an intelligent young man,
With a deep, dark intense look;
So much to see in that face,
So much hidden behind those eyes.

Though he is usually so quiet,
You can tell his mind is alert;
So thoughtful and careful,
I often wonder at this thoughts.

He grows more each day,
Such a smart and talented boy;
I know he will be successful,
As he starts to become a man.

I will wait and see
What his future brings;
But I know it will be great,
His potential is so strong.

So I let him remain in stillness,
This quiet he needs to grow;
Hoping one day he will be ready
To speak and share his thoughts.

So Lovely

My grandma is so lovely,
A beautiful woman to see;
She is lovely inside too,
Her heart is pure gold.

She has given so much to us,
Over all these years;
We are so blessed to still have her,
To share that love again.

Each day with her is precious,
She still has that sparkle and glow;
Though the memories flicker,
Her light is shining for all.

I love to see her face light up
When she sees us come in her room;
So happy to see her visitors,
We are glad to bring her company.

So although she lives away from me,
She is never truly alone;
She lives in each of our hearts,
Most precious and dear to our souls.

Just Like You

When I was younger
We would often bicker;
Two much alike,
Yet we would differ.

I couldn't see myself
In all the things you did;
It was not cool
To be just like you.

I won my independence,
But still needed you there;
You needed me too,
Your baby in your sight.

You were the teacher,
But as I grew older,
I often taught you
New wonders through my eyes.

One day the bickering stopped;
I matured and saw the light;
Why should I keep fighting,
With a mirror of myself?

I had always loved you dearly,
But fought to be myself;
Then one day I realized,
I wanted to be just like you.

We had become great friends;
In many ways alike;
So many interests to share,
So much yet to learn.

Each day I see more of you
Blossoming inside myself;
Now I treasure each way
That I can be just like you.

For I cannot imagine
A mother or person more dear;
So honest, loving and giving;
No one else can compare.

So Dear Mother I give you
The best compliment that I can:
I am proud to be your daughter,
Someone who is just like you.
