My Friend and Soul Mate

This page contains poems about my husband, during various phases of our relationship. Most were written when we first fell in love, but new ones I have included as links.

Our story:
We met at a work going away lunch in 1996. He was sitting across from me
and we were both from Cleveland and had come up to Michigan for the job.
We got to know each other slowly and then went on our first "date" in April 1997.
We went to a Pistons/Cavs game and talked the whole time. Then we went to
a club after. We went out a few times, but it then moved to the friend zone for
a few months but I wanted more. I felt that he was "The One." I had never
written so much poetry for anyone before. We then fell in love on a houseboat
trip in Kentucky in Summer 1997. It was an on again/off again relationship at
first. But we always felt a strong friendship and love for each other. We broke
up in 2000 and I cried for months. We stayed friends but kept our distance.
I looked for love again and grew on my own during that break. Then in 2003
he wanted to get back together. We did and the next year we were engaged,
the year after married and one year later we had our daughter. He was the one
after all, as I always felt in my heart. I am very blessed to have him in my life.

The majority of these poems were written in 1997 (age 27). The first set are about being in the "friend zone" and how I wanted more. Then true love blossomed and I wrote some of my best poems ever. Love is great!

I hope you enjoy a peek into the journey of our love.

********************************************************************

Written upon entering the friend zone - 5/17/97, after a month of promising dates:

Too Late

The night was so magic
Until those fatal words were spoken:
"We can only be friends."
They have left me heartbroken.

Why is life so unfair?
Am I asking too much?
All I want is to feel
The warmth of your touch.

It's too late for me to hide
The feelings that have grown;
The time we've spent has made them
Far stronger than I'd known.

How can you in one breath
Say that you could "fall for me,"
And in the next declare
That only friends can we be?

I want to understand,
To be a faithful friend;
But if we stay this close,
My heart may never mend.

If you "keep up your defenses,"
What am I going to do?
How can I just be your friend,
When I've already fallen for you?

Take A Chance

You say you're afraid to fall for me,
But won't you take a chance?
If you just take that little step,
We could have a great romance.

Although I haven't know you long,
I like what I can see;
So drop all your defenses,
And take a chance with me

Untitled:
My emotions are on a roller coaster ride;
They weren't prepared for this bad news.
I was on a high before,
Now I am singing the blues.

I Can't Help It

I can't help remembering:
All that we've done,
All that you've said,
How your smile lights up your face,
That look out of the side of your eyes.

I can't help all that I'm feeling.
You've sent me on a roller coaster ride.
I've gone from flying high up in the clouds,
To sinking deep into an abyss.

Can you possibly know:
How sad and lost I feel?
How much this is consuming me?
How much your words have changed everything?
How much I wish it were a dream?

Even though it's true:
We haven't known each other that long,
You never promised me anything,
I always get attached too fast;

I can't understand:
Why you didn't speak sooner,
Why you gave me hope,
Why I didn't see the reality,
Why you won't tell me all.

I can't help hoping:
That you'll take the words back,
That it's all just a dream,
That there may still be a chance.

I can't help the fact:
That I want to be your friend,
That I want so much more,
That I've already fallen for you.

Lover's Triangle - written 6/1/97:

Waiting

I feel caught in a void,
Between friendship and love,
And any moment it will engulf me.

I'm standing at one side of a ravine,
And you are on the other side;
Will I find the bridge that joins us?

I'm waiting at a crossroads.
One direction leads to you,
That other leads away.
Which should I take?

Waiting is the hardest task to do.
I feel out of control.
Time is controlling my destiny.

How long is long enough to wait?
If I don't wait long enough,
Or if I wait too long,
I can lose.
I may wait, only to find
What I am waiting for is gone.

Time is so precious.
Waiting wastes this time.
Is it time well spent?
Only time can tell us!

Time is so fickle.
It can be a healing friend,
Or a wasteful enemy.
It is a daily reminder of both our
Existence and our mortality.

The time spent waiting
Can never be regained.
So we must choose well
What we wait for.

Is she worth the time for you?
Are you worth the time for me?
I'll wait and see,
And hope time is my friend.

More of the same - 6/13/97

Second Best

You say that you must wait,
That you must give her a chance;
Although it's not a competition,
I feel I've lost the race.

You say you want to wait,
For her sake and for yours,
Which leaves me trailing by the side,
Searching for the right path.

She seems to be a ghost,
Who's left a trail behind,
She took your heart,
And ran to the finish line.

No matter what I do,
She may always win;
Even if I stand and wait,
She'll always pass me by.

By saying no to me,
You've chosen her instead;
Will her shadow always be there,
If I ever get a chance?

If you had the choice right now,
You would surely choose her;
Which places me in second,
Can I ever move ahead?

If I wait for you to wait for her,
Will it ever be right?
Will you ever love me like you love her now,
Like I think I love you?

Or will her memory always be there,
In the gap between us,
Always reminding me
That I am second best?

Friendship for Now

Even though you say we can't be a pair,
I feel at ease by your side;
Even though you say we can only be friends,
I feel such joy when you are near.

I am happy being with you,
Whatever it may be;
I will accept what you can give me now,
And hope that more may come.

Whenever I think of a fun thing to do,
I want it to be with you;
You are in my thoughts often,
Whether happy or sad.

Ironically the happy times
Outweigh the sad;
Usually the sad times
Are when I am away from you.

Being with you makes me happy,
Just being your friend.

Open Your Eyes

Will you ever open your eyes to see:
The person standing here before you,
The person wanting to be near you,
The person trying not to scare you,
The person enjoying your friendship,
The person waiting for you to decide?
The person waiting to love you?

Even when you are next to me,
Sometimes I feel you are far away;
You put up a wall to hide yourself,
From the feelings that are growing inside.

Won't you open your eyes
And tear down your wall?
I'll be standing in front of you,
Next to the crumbled stones,
Hoping you'll see me,
Hoping you'll love me.

Friendship still strong, she ends it - he doesn't want to see me - written 6/19/97:

Open the Door

Because you are my friend,
I feel your pain.
Because you are hurting,
I am hurting too.

Did you think I would be happy
To see you hurting?
Did you think I would rejoice
That your love was betrayed?

Although the wait has ended,
I feel no elation,
Only shock and sadness,
At the loss you are feeling.

Now I must wait again,
Because you ask me to.
You always ask the things,
Which are hardest to do.

You asked me to be your friend,
When I wanted more.
Now as your friend,
You ask me to back away.

Where does that leave me?
You open a door,
Then you shut it again.
How am I ever to get in?

Won't you let me in,
And at least be your friend?
I only want to ease
The pain you are feeling.

Open your door,
And maybe together,
We can find a way
To stop the hurt we are both feeling.

Fear

When you asked me to be just a friend,
I was afraid it would never be more,
I was afraid of waiting for you,
I was afraid of loving you.

As I became your friend,
I was content with what it was,
I was ready to wait for you,
I slowly grew to love you.

The more time we spent together,
The more I grew to know you,
The more I wanted to do with you,
The more I became comfortable.

I have come to accept what we have,
Your friendship means a lot to me.
No matter what happens,
I never want to lose it.

Now that you ask me to wait again,
I am afraid that you will shut me out,
I am afraid of losing your friendship,
I am confused and sad.

Friendship Forever - written 6/23/97:

Cross My Heart

Cross my heart and hope to die,
Stick a needle in my eye,
I will never tell a lie,
I will be your friend forever.

Whether happy or sad,
In good times or bad,
Whether sunshine or clouds,
I will never let you down.

If you need a listening ear,
Or a word of good cheer,
I promise to be there,
Whenever you may call.

When you have a crazy scheme,
A fiendish plot to plan,
I will be at your side,
Willing to lend a hand.

Not only your joy,
But your pain I want to share;
That is what a friend is for,
To help in your despair.

I will give a needed hug,
Or just walk by your side;
Or sit in quiet while you think,
To help the time go by.

All I ask of you,
Is to do the same for me;
Trust in our friendship,
Wherever it may lead.

I have no expectations,
Let's play it day by day;
We'll see where friendship leads us,
And have fun along the way.

Whatever may happen,
This promise will I make:
To be a faithful friend forever,
That is the vow I take.

Almost Love - written 6/30/97:

Be Near Me

I want you to be near me:
When I'm lying in the sun,
Gazing at the stars,
Walking in the woods,
Sitting in the breeze,
Listening to music,
Watching a movie or play,
Playing pool,
Playing a game,
Or just talking about nothing and everything.
I want you to be near me always.

True love at last - August 1997:

I Love

Your smile,
Your expressive eyes,
Your boyish face,
The taper of your hair on your neck,
Your long, thin legs,
Your tall, lean stance,
The way you look at me when we are close,
When you say you love me,
Dancing close to you.
Kissing you!
When you kiss me!
Your arms around me.
Listening to music with you.
Being comfortable with you.
Walking with you.
Talking with you.
Gazing at the stars and moon with you.
Watching the sunrise or sunset.
Sitting in the park with you.
Driving in the car together.

Singing with you.
Having fun on the cot with you!
Being open with each other.
"Friends in Love"
Your thoughtfulness.
Your unselfishness.
The way you touch me.
Your unique perspective.
Your friendship!
Cooking for you.
Getting flowers from you!
Being spontaneous.
Playing pool with you.
Watching movies together.
Going to concerts together.
Sleeping next to you.
Waking up in your arms.
Holding your hand.
Laughing together.
Being crazy together!

Sun and Moon of Our Love - our special themes - written 10/31/97
I consider these some of my best and favorite poems I have written, on two favorite themes

Love Under The Sun and Moon

Love is Like The Sun

Love is Like The Moon

The Full Moon of Our Love

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Written for my husband when we were first dating.
I started this as a sonnet, but I could never figure out a way to end it.
So it ended up a poem with a great rhyming scheme.

Love is Like A Circle
